The Bridge: Small town home-cooked meals

A couple months ago, my sister was petsitting for our cousin. We decided to try a little restaurant by their house because the to-go menu said had gluten-free bread and buns. Even better, they don’t charge extra because “why should you have to pay for having an allergy you can’t help?” If only all restaurants had that philosophy! The Bridge is located in Hemby Bridge, a town of about 1700. It is a fairly small restaurant that also has an outdoor seating area where diners can take in live music. The place was packed when we went on Saturday night. The restaurant’s website says that the owners’ grandparents and great-grandparents settled in Hemby Bridge when it was “nothing but rolling pastures, homesteads, and farmland. They carved out their niche as farmers, taking care of the land, and helping our small community to grow.”

The Bridge’s menu is locally sourced whenever possible and their meat is always fresh (except for a few instances). They’re open for breakfast and lunch Monday through Thursday. They have expanded hours on Fridays and Saturdays to serve dinner and are closed on Sundays. The menu has a variety of options ranging from sandwiches to barbecue plates to burgers and hot dogs to specialty entrees, such as Pecan Honey Roasted Chicken and Grilled Salmon.

The Bridge is a throwback to yesteryear.

We informed the waitress why we decided to come. She confirmed that they did serve gluten-free bread and buns. As is customary with most places that we go, Nikki had to ask questions about how the food is prepared. She ordered the hamburger steak and fries (hooray for being cooked in oils that Nikki can ingest). For some reason, she was given a regular roll. When Nikki questioned again whether they had gluten-free bread and our waitress said “yes”, but didn’t offer to bring any to Nikki. This led her to believe that maybe it was sandwich bread and not rolls. I ended up with two rolls, so…

I ordered the chicken tender basket. It was pretty good, but not great. The fries and rolls were good. Overall, The Bridge isn’t anything to gush over, but it wasn’t bad either. I really love that such a small restaurant even has options for those with dietary restrictions. That’s pretty rare and I commend The Bridge for that!
