What to Order at Wayback Burgers If You Have Dietary Restrictions

A couple of weekends ago, I was having a girl’s day with my mom and sister for my birthday. Before going shopping, we decided to get lunch, which is wise because I tend to get hangry. I don’t do it on purpose, it just happens. Fun fact: I’m currently wearing a shirt that has Stitch on it that says HANGRY above his head. My family knows me well.

To keep Hangry Hulk from making an appearance when we were celebrating my born day, we decided to go to Wayback Burgers. There’s a location not far from us that we had passed a few times before (it also happens to be next to Which Wich; check out what to order there). We figured they’d have something Nikki could eat and decided to go without consulting their Allergen Info. Had we done that, I’m not sure that we would’ve gone. Back to that in a moment.

If you’re not familiar with Wayback Burgers, they were formed in Connecticut in 1991. According to their Facebook page, they are known for their burgers and thick, hand-dipped milkshakes. With 100 locations across 24 states, you’re likely to come across one while traveling. If you’re traveling abroad, you may also find one if you’re in the Middle East, or Northern Africa. They’re also planning expansions in Argentina, Canada, Mexico, and Pakistan.

As soon as we got there, Nikki asked her normal questions: “Are your fries gluten- and soy-free?”and “do you have gluten-free buns?” The guy working the register checked with the kitchen staff to get these answers. “No” was the answer to both questions. He did offer to give her a lettuce bun. She was only able to order hamburger patties. I order a cheeseburger with pickles and ketchup (my standard preference for burgers) and my mom ordered the Carolina Burger. We split an order of fries.

Nikki’s burger came out and it wasn’t on a lettuce bun. It was simply served in a fry box. She decided not to ask for lettuce and it can sometimes make the burger soggy. Despite the fact that there was no lettuce, Nikki did think the burger tasted good. However, it wasn’t filling whatsoever and there was nothing else for her to eat. According to their allergen info, their burgers contain soy. Luckily, Nikki didn’t experience any stomach discomfort. That being said, we likely will not frequent Wayback Burgers because their aren’t enough options for her.

Wayback Burgers are fresh, never frozen.

The Carolina Burger is a regional menu option. It consists of American cheese, slaw, chili, onions, and mustard. My mom was a fan.

  1. I couldn’t eat there either. I am a pescatarian (I am a vegetarian that eats fish). I tend to avoid burger joints. It’s really sad they didn’t give Nikki the correct order with the lettuce. I don’t blame you for not going back with limited options – especially when they messed it up.

    • They do have a fish sandwich, but they still might not align with your diet. There are other places that she can eat, so there’s not really any point in going back.

    • I guess you’d say this place is in between fast food and gourmet burgers, though they do offer some fancier burgers like the Carolina Burger, Veggie Burger, and Turkey Burger.

    • Thank you, Michelle! I did have a good birthday. It would be good business for them because it would bring in more customers. Having gluten-free buns is better than nothing.

  2. That burger looks very sad, just the meat and ketchup on top… I’m sure they could put a little bit of an effort and develop a menu for people with dietary intolerance as well.

    • The filter on that photo didn’t help it look less sad. lol She was sad that she only had that for lunch. Even just a few items would be a huge help to so many customers. Having the option of a gluten-free bun is a minimal, but helpful effort.

  3. Love being able to read and follow you so I know what I can eat when we travel! It can be so hard and I hate missing out!

  4. Being a foodie this mouth watering pics of burgers are driving me to feel more hungry. I wish Wayback Burgers would have opened their outlet in my country too. Then it will be easier for me to gorge upon some of their tasty platters.. ๐Ÿ˜‹๐Ÿ˜‹

  5. I know that feeling all too well. I have a lot of dietary restrictions, so finding restaurants I can actually eat a filling and healthy meal is pretty difficult sometimes, especially if I’m in a new city.

  6. Ooh this makes me hungry…I love burgers but tend to avoid them for the gluten…i think food outlets should start focussing on people with dietary restrictions as well now!

  7. Once again more delicious looking foods! I wish I could try some of the places you go to, haha. I get hangry too. Once the process into hangry has began it can not be switched off until my food meter is filled back up and turns from red to green colour. I do feel bad for Nikki though, I’ve had similar experiences and I know it makes those with me feel really guilty/sorry for me but I always try not to let them worry about it. I hope she managed to find something else somewhere else to keep the food meter at bay.

    • LOL, I know exactly what you mean! I definitely have to get my food meter back into the safe zone after it drops into the red. It’s hard not feel guilty sometimes, but she can usually find something everywhere we go.

  8. Oh!! This is really awesome. My friend of mine is having a dietary restriction and I think she needs to know about this. I will share this with her.

  9. This sounds like a nice place to eat and The Carolina Burger sounds so good and delicious. It is always a good idea to check google or facebook pages for specialties and reviews of the place before heading there.

    • It is a nice place to eat and my mom was definitely a fan of the Carolina Burger. We normally check online first, but for some reason, thought we could get by this time. We got a reminder not to do that!
