Easy Vegan Cheese Dip (GF, DF, SF, TF, PF, Paleo)

With the Super Bowl coming up soon, I was trying to come up with a recipe for all the festivities. Dips are one of the most common dishes at any party, celebration, get together, etc. As I started perusing Pinterest for recipes, many of them were made with cashews. I even found one made with eggplant and another with zucchini. Intriguing. We decided to go with a bean base for two reasons: it’s nut free and cashews aren’t cheap.

Whether you’re here for the football, commercials, or the Justin Timberlake show (I hate one team and don’t care about the other, so I’m here for Justin and hoping that he brings Janet and *N Sync), you have a yummy cheese dip to eat by the bowl. No judgement here.

Ingredients

(Yields 1 3/4c)

1 c cooked white beans (we used Great Northern beans)

1/2 c milk of choice (we used Rice Dreams)

1/3 “cheese” shreds (we used Follow Your Heart) or 5 tbsp nutritional yeast

1/2 tsp salt

1/8 tsp garlic powder

Pro tip #1: If you’re using nutritional yeast, add 1/2 tsp white or apple cider vinegar

Pro tip #2: Add 2 tsp buttery spread or olive oil to add a rich depth

Instructions

If using canned beans, drain and rinse. If using dry beans, soak at least one hour (overnight is better).

Cook on high until it reaches a boil; reduce to medium and cover with lid; cook for one hour

Blend all ingredients except cheese

Transfer to a pot; add cheese

Heat on low and stir occasionally until cheese is melted and desired serving is reached (we did 20-30 minutes without a timer because we were checking it often to stir)

Option: Instant Pot version

Instead of transferring to a pot on the stove, you can put your blended mix in an instant pot. Heat for 5 minutes.

There you have it. Serve your cheese dip when ready.

Nikki was a fan. I thought it wasn’t too bad. I’m not a fan of beans, though it didn’t have a pronounced bean flavor. I also have issues with texture, so I wasn’t feeling it. If you want a thinner consistency for your dip, blend longer. We also forgot about the option of adding olive oil or a buttery spread, which would’ve probably helped. You can also add more milk to make it thinner.

  1. That sounds really good! I’m amybe like the only human on this planet who’s never had a cheese dip (or not that I can remember) but I like that this one runs soley on alternative products, I’ll have to give this one a go!

  2. This is a very interesting recipe as I never thought that a cheese dip could be vegan. It sounds delicious actually and so easy to make!

    • That’s why I’m thankful for Pinterest! lol My sister gets vegan cheese often, so we knew there had to be a way to make a dip with it. It was super easy to make! Boiling the beans was the longest part of the whole recipe!

  3. This isn’t exactly my cup of tea (huge cheese lover here) but it looks like a great option for Vegans or those with dairy sensitivities! I’m sure it would be a great addition to a Super Bowl party!

  5. I am not a fan of beans in a dip either, but I am glad you provided a link to other possible spreads. It is perfect for snacks in front of TV, and while in the store they are ridiculously priced, I bet these taste better even when they don’t succed completely. But you know they are homemade, with love 🙂

  6. Wow, I don’t think I’ve ever heard of vegan cheese shreds before – are they only available in the US? I used to think that going vegan would be quite hard, but it seems like there are more and more options for vegan alternatives these days! x

    • Becca, I think that Daiya is available in the UK. That’s another brand that makes dairy alternatives and they also have cheese shreds. There are much more options these days. I can’t imagine what it was like 15-20 year ago. And there are many foods that taste really good!
